David Marmann

Fire Lieutenant, FDNY

David Marmann is a third-generation firefighter whose family has proudly served the Fire Department of the City of New York since 1936. His FDNY family legacy includes his grandfather, father, and brother. His nephew, Thomas, is a fourth-generation FDNY firefighter, continuing a tradition of service that has spanned nearly a century. David’s career in public service began in 1983, when he joined the Jericho Volunteer Fire Department. In August 1990, he was sworn into the FDNY. After graduating from probie school, he was assigned to Ladder 127 in South Jamaica, Queens. In 1996, he transferred to Rescue Company 1 in Manhattan, one of the FDNY’s busiest and most demanding units. David was also a member of NY Task Force 1, New York City’s Urban Search and Rescue team. As part of this specialized team, he was trained and prepared to respond to complex emergencies involving structural collapses, technical rescues, and other large-scale disasters. On September 11, 2001, David was off duty at home when he learned of the attacks on the World Trade Center. He immediately responded, making his way to the site to assist fellow firefighters and emergency personnel. He arrived during the South Tower collapse and joined the rescue and recovery operations. Rescue Company 1 ultimately lost 11 members that day, a devastating loss to the company and the entire FDNY family. David carried the memory of those who gave their lives with him throughout the remainder of his career, honoring their sacrifice through his continued service, leadership, and dedication to protecting others. His response on September 11 became one of the defining chapters of a career marked by courage, commitment, and service to the people of New York. David was promoted to lieutenant in April 2002 and assigned to Squad 270 in South Queens. He remained with Squad 270 until his retirement in December 2016. Throughout his career, he served in busy and challenging companies and became known for his operational experience, leadership, and commitment to the members under his command. David also served as an instructor at the FDNY Rescue School, helping prepare firefighters for the demanding conditions they might face in the field. His expertise and leadership were demonstrated during numerous emergency operations, including the 2002 AirTrain derailment in Queens, where he led operations during the response. He was decorated eight times during his FDNY career in recognition of his service and accomplishments. Beyond the firehouse, David is a devoted husband and the proud father of two daughters and a son. His life and career stand as a testament to service, family, brotherhood, and dedication to the communities he was honored to protect. Through his service with the Jericho Volunteer Fire Department and the FDNY, his membership in NY Task Force 1, and his leadership in some of New York’s most challenging emergencies, David Marmann carried forward a proud family tradition while creating a lasting legacy of his own.
